Eligibility for 2 Year Old Funding

Supporting families with funded early learning and childcare for eligible 2-year-olds

Who Can Access Funding?

In Scotland, 2-year-olds may be eligible for funded early learning and childcare if their parents receive certain benefits or if the child has experience of care.

Eligibility Criteria

Qualifying Benefits

Your 2-year-old may be eligible for funded early learning and childcare if you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit (with a monthly household take-home pay of £850 or less)
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker's Allowance (Income-based)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (Income-related)
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit (with an income of £16,105 or less)
  • Working Tax Credit (with an income of £16,105 or less)

Experience of Care

Your child may also qualify if they have experience of care, meaning they have been looked after by the local authority or are under a kinship care or guardianship order. This applies to children who are currently in care or have been at any point since their second birthday.

Eligible 2-year-olds can access up to 1140 hours of funded early learning and childcare per year, which is available in various local authority and funded provider nurseries.
